San Diego State University
Peterson Gym
San Diego, California
Project Type: Renovation
Opening: 2010
Architect: Paul Benton Architect, Inc
AD Scope: Acoustics, Audio, Video, Room Design AssistanceAlthough still considered a “gym” the San Diego State University Peterson Gym has under gone quite a change. The gym first opened in 1961 and for years was the home to the SDSU Aztec basketball team and remains the home to the Aztec volleyball and gymnastics teams.
Recently the facility has been transformed to meet both athletic needs as well as much needed additional classroom space. The upper balcony portion of the main gym has been split into classrooms. They now have two new state of the art high technology classrooms as well as a physical education classroom. Acoustic Dimensions was brought in to consult on the audio and video design for the high tech classrooms and to ensure sound isolation between all of the spaces. The main gymnasium and classrooms are often being used simultaneously so much care was taken to ensure that the academic classrooms have sound isolation between each other as well as sound isolation from the activities going on in the gym. The result has been a success for all.
