The new music building at University of Tennessee Knoxville will be home to faculty, students and performers attending or visiting the University. The new facility will include performance spaces, rehearsal rooms, practice rooms, music labs, offices and support spaces. The project includes a 225-seat recital hall for the many student and faculty music recitals, along with chamber music performances. The next phase of the project will include a large concert hall/opera house to support the program’s large ensembles and strong opera program.
The acoustics of the Recital Hall will be adjustable to support the wide range of music genres including jazz, acoustic recitals, choral and instrumental chamber music, etc. The performance platform is large enough to accommodate the largest anticipated chamber ensembles, and yet includes scaling devices that provide for a more appropriate environment for solo recitals.
The building footprint is limited, owing to a fairly restricted site. As a result, the building has multiple levels, adding to the challenge of achieving adequate sound isolation between the many acoustically critical performance, rehearsal and practice spaces within the building. The building is actually constructed of multiple independent building structures.
