Binghamton University purchased a very high quality 20-stop pipe organ, built by Hellmuth Wolff and Associates.
Acoustic Dimensions led the design of converting an opera rehearsal room into an organ recital hall to house
this instrument, and to maximize the acoustical support of this instrument within the fairly tight constraints of the
project scope and budget.While the plan shaping of the opera rehearsal room was conducive to good acoustics for organ, optimally, there
was not sufficient volume for the proposed organ to be placed in this room. In order to better accommodate
the organ acoustically, we recommended that the volume between the ceiling and the underside of the roof be
captured by removing the ceiling.
The masonry walls, floor and roof provided for excellent finishes to support organ music.
Adjustable acoustics elements were incorporated into the design to allow the room to continue to function for
rehearsal and teaching without compromising the acoustical quality for the pipe organ.
