The King Edward VI Music School recital hall and tutor/practice rooms were formed within the shell of an old gymnasium. The construction and fitting out of the Music School was completed within a budget of £340,000.

The recital room has acoustical curtains that retract into storage pockets. For brass and amplified music, the curtains are extended; for strings and vocal works, the curtains are retracted.

Two floors of practice rooms were created within the limited height and load capability of the existing gymnasium. Despite the limitations of lightweight construction, excellent acoustical separation of adjacent practice rooms was achieved.
