AD Scope: Acoustics, Sound Isolation and
Noise Control
The 1,100-seat Concert Hall in Kazan, Tartarstan, was completed in August 1996. Our design includes a reverberation chamber placed next to the concert room. Sound can pass between the concert room and the chamber via large doorways when the doors are open, thus producing a fuller sound. The addition of the reverberation chamber makes it possible to adjust the acoustics of the concert room to suit the type of performance.
As part of the design process, we prepared audible simulations using computer models of sound in the the hall. The simulations showed that the use of the reverberation chamber does not affect the clarity of the sound, but it does extend the late sound as if the concert hall had a much larger cubic volume. Measurements and listening tests in the completed hall have confirmed the accuracy of the simulations.
