The new Ledbetter Auditorium was designed to support various forms of dramatic theater and some limited
musical theater. In addition to the theatrical events, the room also serves as a music performance space for
various choral ensemble performances and chamber music performances.
For theater, the actors must feel a sense of support from the room. There should be no need to amplify spoken
word to achieve excellent intelligibility. Acoustical intimacy was achieved by the limited plan dimensions of the
auditorium, and was assisted by wrapping the audience around the thrust performance platform. The wrap-around
seating plan, with steeply-raked seating banks, provide excellent support of acoustical intimacy.
