The Royal Shakespeare Company has secured £112.8m from major donors all over the world to transform the Royal Shakepeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in central England. The RSC plans to “create the most dynamic spaces to both perform and enjoy Shakespeare.”
The improvements to the 14 acre site include, a double-height rooftop restaurant with views of the River Avon and the Bancroft gardens, restoration of the original riverside facade, the foyer and circle bar of the 1932 building. The most exciting change will come with construction of a new 1000-seat thrust stage auditorium, which will become the largest thrust stage with a tiered auditorium in the world. The new performance space will bring actors and audience closer together, with the distance of the seat furthest from the stage being reduced from 27m to 15m.
