The Broadcast Facility at Columbia University’s Journalism School underwent a major renovation in 2003. The Roone Arledge Broadcast Lab contains several state-of-the-art features which help to prepare students for career opportunities, including TV Studio, Control Room, Voice Booth, and Non-linear Editing Suites
The Journalism School’s TV studio The Journalism School’s TV studio houses a professional news set with several shooting positions. Robotic cameras capture the action remotely in the adjacent control room while lighting is controlled with a digital dimmer board. The design of the studio allows for a professional studio environment that can be operated with a small staff.
The TV Control Room handles operations for broadcasts in the TV studio, and includes video and audio control and production equipment. Audio signal can be sent directly to an Avid project or can be sent through the router to any location in the studio from the sound-isolated Voice Booth. The Journalism School’s non-linear editing suites feature 40 Avid systems utilizing the Newscutter XP software. The Fred Friendly Newsroom includes 18 Avid stations, and feeds the studio router from individual workstations.
