Sirius Radio represents a new concept in broadcasting. From three satellites in orbit above North America, the station broadcasts 100 channels of commercial-free, compact-disc quality music, news, sports, and entertainment programming. The targeted program material includes both re-packaged content from outside producers, as well as content produced within Sirius Radio's new 18-studio facility in midtown Manhattan.
Acoustic Dimensions was proud to have been selected as acoustics consultant for the project. The client's unique requirements included maximizing the glass wall area for each studio, to create an open feel to the physical plant. We developed room acoustic and partition designs which permitted fully glazed corridor walls, while achieving superior control of reverberant energy within each studio as well as sound isolation between spaces.
The production studio configuration permits each Combo Studio to act as a stand-alone studio, or to serve as control room for a shared Talk Studio. A high degree of sound isolation between studio spaces was a requirement to permit this multi-configuration environment without interference between spaces.
A double-height fully glass-enclosed Recording Studio for music, speech, or video was also created in the facility. Directly opposite the main satellite telemetry control room, the acoustical challenges of this large multipurpose studio have been met with a custom-designed two dimensional ceiling diffuser, and sloping double-glazed 20-foot high glass-mullion walls.
A unique commercial facility, Sirius Radio provides an excellent example of cutting edge acoustical design tailored to the specific requirements and vision of its entrepreneurial management.
