When Lake Pointe outgrew their facility, it was a natural progression to look to build a new one. However, when a sister church in the area began seeking a smaller facility with less overhead, the two congregations decided to swap buildings.
Although this was a perfect solution to their need for more space, the “new” sanctuary didn’t meet the prioritized goals of the ministry. The room was not supportive of congregational participation. The sightlines from the middle seating area to the platform were very poor, and it was not possible for all of the congregation to see the video projection screens. Our task was to make recommendations for changes to the sanctuary and technical systems to address these deficiencies
We recommended resloping the front floor area and raising the platform. The design improved sightlines and allowed wheelchair access to the front seating area. Changes to the finishes of floors, ceiling and rear walls helped improve acoustics, while recommendations were made to decrease background noise caused by HVAC systems.
We examined the audio systems and designed in order to maximize usage of existing equipment while updating systems for the long term. The focus of the design was to enhance congregational participation in the service while also supporting high energy concerts by contemporary Christian artists.
The size of the sanctuary dictated that the front projection video screens be very large and very bright; however the two existing screens could only be seen by 50% of the seating area. In conjunction with the architect, changes were made to the staging area which served the dual purpose of reangling the projection screens while improving acoustics in the choir area.
