Project Type: Renovation
Seat Count: 1,100
Opening: 2008
AD Scope: Acoustics, Audio
Building on a heritage of over 30 years of ministry, Prestoncrest Church of Christ decided to renovate its existing sanctuary technology systems with a focus on improving intelligibility of the spoken word in the octagonally-shaped worship center while not altering the architecture. This meant that any new systems had to be completely hidden from view.
The 20-year-old ceiling-mounted speaker system had been supplemented over the years with replacement gear and Acoustic Dimensions recommended a system that improved imaging, directionality, volume and coverage consistency to the different seating areas. It was necessary to add speakers to improve intelligibility to the side sections and front fill speakers to improve coverage to the first three rows of seating and improve sonic imaging to the platform. A new high-quality DSP processor and replacement of the existing audio console were important to system fidelity and contributed to vocal range intelligibility, smoother frequency response, and provides pristine equalization. AD took into account the church’s growing reliance on video in worship and also incorporated subwoofers in the design. The addition of specific acoustical treatment into the room helped reduce the overall reverberance, targeting wall surfaces that have the most negative impact on the spoken word (such as rear walls and portions of side walls), and preserved surfaces that are important to the support of music (such as the ceiling and portions of the side/front walls).
