Video Systems Design | Exposure for Video

While the human eye will compensate for extreme contrast, a camera has a very narrow latitude. When aimed at a subject in front of a window, the camera engineer has to make a choice between shading (exposing) for window or shading for subject.

Neutral density / color correcting film applied to windows is a common solution to alleviate this challenge when using windows in broadcast.

Another solution is to increase the subject's lighting to a level equal to the brightness of the exterior. Depending on the light level, this is sometimes not practical.
